It is parochial of me but I think that Florida’s extraordinary water resources rank close to the top of “specialness” for any state. Few if any states have as remarkable a set of water bodies:
- Thousands of streams (both blackwater and spring-fed).
- Thousands of lakes (also of diverse types).
- More acres of remaining wetlands than any other state except Alaska.
- “There are no other Everglades in the world.” (There is one other Pantanal in South America, however.)
- Springs, large and small, exceeding any other place in the world.
- Only continental state with extensive nearshore coral reefs.
- Longest coastline (again, except for Alaska)
- Most important U.S. nesting area for seaturtles.
- Thousands of marine mammals (as well as more than a million alligators and 2,000 crocodiles)
- Several enormous estuaries like the Indian River Lagoon, Apalachicola Bay, Florida Bay, and Tampa Bay.
Maybe that is why so many people visit Florida.
