Barbara and Jim Hatchitt make their visit to test our well for nitrates, today May 18, 2019.  Both are volunteers, and Barbara is employed by the Saint Johns River Water Management District.  Dr. Rick Copeland and Jim started the residential program nearly five years ago, and ours was the very first well sampled.

Following is our post of their first visit:

Rick Copeland and Jim Hatchitt on the first well tested in 2014.

Aquifer Watch volunteers Dr. Rick Copeland of Tallahassee and Jim Hatchitt of Gainesville began their study of nitrates contamination within the ten mile area of Poe Springs today, with the very first well visited here at 914 SW Riverland Court,  residence of OSFR member and volunteer Jim Tatum.

The study will test the wells for nitrates and also measure  water levels, and will span a time period of several months.

Dr. Copeland is the founder of Aquifer Watch, and Mr. Hatchitt is affiliated with the Alachua County of Environmental Protection.

AquiferWatch  is an organization dedicated improving the participation of citizens of Florida in the management of their water resources, with emphasis on groundwater.  It is dedicated to assisting citizen volunteers in the monitoring of our groundwater resources and to educating Floridians in the principles of groundwater hydrology.

The second well visited was that at Rum 138, belonging to OSFR president Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson, thus revealing that OSFR is very much involved with this monitoring endeavor.

  1. We’ve been on the testing program from the beginning as well (no pun intended.) They sampled our well on Saturday. Glad to participate in the survey!
