BIG SUGAR IS A SIMPLE MANIFESTATION OF POLITICAL CORRUPTION

Big sugar is a simple manifestation of political corruption, perpetuated by Republicans and Democrats alike, all those who take bribes from these despoilers of the environment.  The following advisory was sent out by Sierra Club.  It is a long way away, but if you can, plan to attend this important meeting.

We rely on healthy land, water and air to grow our crops, and we do more than our part to protect and improve our environment for generations to come. Sugarcane farmers are committed to farming in a sustainable, environmentally responsible way, and our farmers take tremendous pride in what they do.http://www.ussugar.com/

The above comments are from the U.S. Sugar website, claiming to be good stewards of the environment, when in reality they are a fundamental part of the horrible problem in Lake Okeechobee.  Their spokesperson Judy Sanchez, recently said “The water quality of Lake Okeechobee is the best it’s ever been.” See our post.   Her ridiculous statement illustrates how disingenuous their website statements are.

Floridians like you are feeling the effects of Big Sugar’s impact and influence, from the Panhandle to the Keys.

Big Sugar pollutes our water and air, stands in the way of Everglades restoration, makes Floridians sick, and owns way too many of the state’s politicians. For too long, Big Sugar has gotten its way.

There is no more powerful lobbying force than Big Sugar at the local, state or federal levels. This is why Floridians must organize to protect our lands, waters, and health. RSVP for Big Sugar Summit #2 on August 20 in West Palm Beach.

  1. My position for many years has been, that it is not just a matter of ‘sending the water south’, from my long-term environmentalist perspective, the ‘sediments on the lake have to go south as well’, they have been trapped within the dike of Lake “O”, and as the times passes, their level increases (leaving less space for the water not to reach the 14ft maximum), as the toxicity goes up as well.

If I were to be invited to address those attending for just 4 to 5 minutes, I would make my case.
I am the only one pointing at the sediments as the culprit of the problems. As the level of sediments goes unavoidable up the discharges would be more frequent and even more loaded with toxic compounds.
