Well, Sen. Debbie Mayfield had a few environmentalists fooled when she lied to them two years in a row in Tallahassee. She is a pretty good actor but now the cards are on the table and they are dollar bills instead of cards. All 750 thousand of them, that’s three quarters of a million of them.
Senator Debbie Mayfield and Representative Randy Fine appear to be the stand-out dirty money denizens. Both played a role in 2020’s contentious SB712 “Clean Waterways Act” which focused largely on municipal septic and sewer infrastructure while failing to place any meaningful regulations on big agriculture. Thus it should be no surprise the pair reaped nearly $750,000 in contributions for their efforts.
Shame on her first for writing a deceptive bill designed to fool the public, with just enough good things in it to get some backing but carefully, oh, so carefully working around the crucial items so that the users and polluters, who wrote that bill, were sure to get their way.
Shame on her secondly for flat-out lying to those who recognized her deception and wrote articles, op-eds, and went to Tallahassee to speak to her bill. SB 172 was designed to deceive from the very beginning and it was a masterpiece of nefarious nonsense. Her words to those concerned for clean water were “I promise to fix it, I promise.” Well, those who traveled to Tallahassee following year found no fixing, only praise from the current and former Secretaries of DEP and others worried about their environmentalist image, but not in “fixing” the problems.
Ms. Mayfield is a prime example of why satirist Carl Hiaasen calls the opening session of our Legislature the “Annual Festival of Whores.”
Kudos to BullSugar for exposing the facts about the bribes taken in Tallahassee. These are the reasons Florida’s springs and rivers and dying and not being fixed. Politics, corruption and more politics.
