Timothy Cama of The Hill has written about a terrible bill co-sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio to expedite the export of LNG.  This is one more step in hastening the contamination of our planet, one more step in delaying the inevitable transfer to solar and wind, and one more step in putting dollars in the pockets of Big Oil.  Sen. Rubio should be thinking of the long-term needs and the future of Florida, not in helping his fossil fuel backers.  More and more we are seeing the effects of climate change, which are only just beginning.  We can no longer depend on antiquated pipeline infrastructure for antiquated forms of energy, we must change with the planet and go with solar and wind.
Write to Senator Marco Rubio and ask him to step into the 21st Century and do what is best for Florida, not what is best for Big Oil and Mr. Rubio’s bank account.

A pair of Republican senators is proposing to fast-track the approval process for companies wishing to export relatively small-scale volumes of liquefied natural gas.

Under the bill from Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), applications to export up to 51.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day to nearly any country would get Energy Department approval “without modification or delay.”

Currently, all natural gas exports from the contiguous United States must be extensively reviewed and certified by the Energy Department as being in the “public interest” before they can proceed.

“This bill promotes the growth of American natural gas, creating well-paying jobs with good benefits for hardworking families in Louisiana,” Cassidy said in a statement.

“The faster approval of small-scale natural gas shipments will create American jobs, improve Caribbean energy security and lower greenhouse gas emissions,” he continued.

“Expedited approval of small-scale natural gas exports would strengthen an emerging sector of Florida’s economy,” said Rubio.

The bill comes as the Trump administration is working on multiple fronts to promote the production and use of fossil fuels and other domestic energy sources under an “energy dominance” banner.

The legislation mirrors a regulation the Energy Department proposed in September that would similarly expedite approvals for small-scale exports.

Gas demand is growing rapidly in the Caribbean and Latin America, and Republicans and the Trump administration see an opportunity for the United States to take advantage of it.

  1. Thank you for posting this information regarding Senator Rubio’s co-sponsored bill S 1981, which has a goal of expediting the export of liquefied natural gas.
We wrote to Sen. Rubio and told him that we expect that this proposed legislation would cause a speeding up of contamination of our planet. Further we told him that the legislation would delay our inevitable transfer to solar and wind. Finally, we told him that the legislation would lead to putting money into the pockets of big oil companies.
We recommended that Sen. Rubio should begin thinking of the long-term needs and future of Florida. We told him he should be realizing that we can no longer rely upon antiquated pipeline infrastructure for antiquated forms of energy. We told him that we need now (today) to get set up for use of solar and wind.
We told him that our comments make it very clear that we do NOT want the proposed bill, S 1981, to be approved by the U.S. Senate.
