A dedicated group of phosphate mining opponents met today, April 22, 2017 in Hampton, Florida to discuss and learn about the proposed phosphate mine in Union and Bradford Counties.
Carol Mosley Dr. David Wilson Dennis Price Mark Lyons
Hosted by the Suwannee St Johns Sierra Club North Florida Working Group, emcee Chris Mericle presented a group of informative and talented speakers, each giving a different aspect of the mine issue.
Geologist Dennis Price explained the phosphate mining process with specific insight as to what is happening at PCS and what likely would happen at HPS II. This was reinforced by Dr. David Wilson, who spoke specifically to the PCS company and what they have done there. Specifics include health hazards, violations and environmental impacts.
A hard look at Hamilton County can give a graphic idea as to what to expect from HPS II. After a short intermnission, the video produced by CAPM was played. It was mentioned that this video was influential in the decision of the Brooker City Council to officially oppose the mine.
Mark Lyons gave details on how a grassroots group from Baker County was able to effect changes in mining there, outlining the steps in organizing, funding and ultimately overcoming many obstacles.
Finally, local advocate Carol Mosley gave a summary of the confusing history of the mine permit in Bradford County, and presented several options for forward progress.
Afterwards, Paul Still conducted a walking tour of the Sustainable Living Center grounds, and Carol Mosley explained the basics of composting with earthworms.
Always interested in the phosphate mine, several OSFR members were in the audience.

Kate and I discussed the possibility of putting together a fundraiser in Melrose to help with costs sign production, flyers etc. Perhaps even a strategically placed billboard? Keep you posted.
I must have gone to get coffee as I was right there!
