New toilets are coming to Rum Island Park. Thanks largely to Sierra Club Organizer and OSFR Advisor Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson for her tireless concern, the county, after years and years of neglect, has now acted. Rum Island, the only free park for miles around, has suffered from isolation and neglect from the county. It sits at the very bottom of the county, far from thoughts of Lake City, notwithstanding that we do have a county commissioner in this district, although not one who takes care of county parks.
In the past it has been a shame for Columbia County, filthy, over-used and under-maintained. On weekends in the summer, cars are parked every which way, from the boat ramp up the hill to the entrance.

Wow, what an achievement! I used to visit this small beautiful park. I am glad some action is being taken to provide
clean facilities that won’t contaminate the beautiful spring! Thank You for your hard work and dedication Merrillee.
Bravo!
Thank you, Merrillee! Great job!
Thanks Merrielle for staying on top of the need.
