Florida has a superb fossil record which provides a window into our past like no other state in our nation.  Fossils are our connection to mysterious, past worlds populated by strange and wonderful creatures, long gone and never to return.  Come to the New Century Woman’s Club, 23674  US Highway 27, at 6 pm, August 2 to find out more about the Florida’s fossil treasure, and how the fossils came to be in the rivers.

Our Santa Fe River’s historian and board member Dr. Jim Tatum will give a rundown on Fossils 101.  The exhibit in the High Springs Museum contains 19 fossils found in this region, most from the Santa Fe and Suwannee Rivers, with at least one example from each epoch, beginning when Florida first emerged from the warm, shallow ocean over 38 million years ago.  Many of Florida’s (and the United States’) most important fossil finds have come from near our area, Gainesville, White Springs,  Ginnie Springs, and the Ichetucknee River.

This presentation is the first of the series, every Tues. and Wed. night during the month of August.  These are free and sponsored by Water/Ways and are held at the Woman’s Club in High Springs, 23674  US Highway 27.
