DanDorosleff board In: Invasive Weed Control In the Santa Fe | Our Santa Fe River, Inc. (OSFR) | Protecting the Santa Fe River

Guest speaker at the regular board meeting for OSFR this month was Dan Dorosheff, Biological Scientist with the Invasive Plant Management Division of the Fish and Wildlife Commission.  Dan was invited to our meeting to speak about the spraying of herbicides in the Santa Fe River.

Some are concerned about the diquat that is used to kill hyacinths, water lettuce and sometimes cattails.   Although it can sometimes kill fish, diquat is used because it is more economical than mechanical methods.  Dan explained that the FWC is very  receptive to suggestions for other methods which might also serve to check invasive weeds.  OSFR appreciates Dan’s time and information so freely given.

Other news at the meeting included the welcoming of new board member Jane Blais, and also that we are now basically established as a 501 (c) 4 organization.  This means that, as our sister organization, Save the Santa Fe River, we can lobby for and endorse political candidates.  Since we have such a leadership void in environmental issues in Florida,  political advocacy is extremely important, and we welcome this new facet of our group.
