In a unanimous vote tonight the Columbia County commissioners agreed to draft a letter opposing the mine in Bradford and Union Counties.  The letter will be sent to those counties and various agencies  which might have an interest, including permitting agencies such as water management districts and the Army Corps of Engineers.

We had a good turnout of support as Vice President Terry Phelan gave a detailed explanation of the dangers and risks posed by this endeavor, and Marc Lyon of Baker County, who gave insight and information regarding mines and Land Development Regulations in other counties.  Steve Minnis of Suwannee River Water Management District also spoke to the issue, as did Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson, Sierra Club  representative, and your historian, as a riparian land owner downstream from the mine.

Happily, Commissioners DePratter and Williams set the tone for the board when they expressed concern over the risk posed by the mine.  Soon the rest followed in line and the vote was unanimous to draft the requested letter.   Our thanks go to all the board for its foresight in doing this part to stop the mine.

  1. I do NOT trust any politician the county commissioners are just wanna be big shots BUT ARE NOT. Has anyone heard what the Fort White COMMERCIAL chicken Fertilizer plant owners are going to do with the new purchase of the property next to the defunct WATSON cable company property? Seems they are clearing the pines out to probably do more damage to Fort White. I guess if they surround all residents with their ruination of residential communities. They and Bill gates,Pilgrim pride will have the whole area to them selves to ruin and pollute. Run off every resident and take over laugh all the way.
Is this being kept quite for another county commission profit? Pay off?
I personalty can NOT afford to move to another state this government here is crooked as hell from governor to local. Money is the answer to all things here. Time to leave!
