Alan Toth’s documentary “Mining Phosphorus” will be shown in Gainesville at the Hippodrdome Theatre, located in downtown Gainesville at 25 SE 2nd Pl.
Thanks go to OSFR board member Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson, whose efforts to bring this important film to the area resulted in Cinema Verde arranging this showing at the Hippodrome.
This will be the second showing of the film in the area, after its first appearance in Orlando last October.
West coast filmmaker Alan Toth came to Florida to film the phosphate issue and was refused access to interview Mosaic representatives, but was able to interview some from HPSII Enterprises of Bradford County, and many people who oppose HPS’ proposed mine, including members of OSFR, Bradford Environmental Forum, Sierra Club and Citizens Against Phosphate Mining.
Bradford Environmental Forum will have tables set up at the theater from 6 to 8 pm to provide information and answer questions regarding the proposed mine.
OSFR has been a strong opponent to phosphate mining, since it is one of the most destructive industries in the world. A mine in Bradford County near the Santa Fe River would have the potential of doing serious and long-lasting damage to the river, and would also impact wildlife, the aquifer and the current rural life style of the area.
