Researchers concluded recently that what was thought to be a single species of alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) in the southeast is in fact three species, withtwo newly named species centered in the Suwannee River (M. suwannensis) and Apalachicola River (M. apalachicolae) regions. The survival of all three species is impossible without a high level of habitat protection.
Perhaps, if Florida’s unique springs prove unable to defend themselves, giant native turtles can take on the task of defending both Florida water resources and themselves. Springs are confined within their watery borders but terrestrial troops of angry giant turtles would have no such limitation.
All sorts of help will be needed if the Legislature fails to meet its responsibilities.
