Wildlife Foundation of Florida Protect Florida Springs Tag Grant Program

Lower Santa Fe River Basin Springs and Groundwater Synoptic Nitrate Sampling and Outreach Education and outreach coupled with scientific investigative activities offer the public a unique opportunity to learn about springs and how citizens can help protect springs. The project is to conduct synoptic nitrate sampling to provide an overall view of nitrate concentrations in groundwater and springs. The study will include springs and groundwater sampling at an estimated 100 locations in the Lower Santa Fe Basin, encompassing portions of three counties, Alachua, Columbia, and Gilchrist. Wells will be sampled by homeowner volunteers with assistance from AquiferWatch during the week of September 15-19, 2014 and a second set of samples will be collected during the week of May 18-22, 2015. Samples will have to be delivered to the LakeWatch laboratory or to one of sample drop off locations on the day of collection.Homeowners will be provided the results of analyses following each sampling event, along with an interpretation of the results. A key component to the project will be public outreach and personal involvement of homeowners on springs and groundwater water quality and what they can do to protect and improve it.If you live in the project area and have a well that you would like to be included in this unique research project please contact Fritzi Olson with Current Problems at aar@currentproblems.org (352) 215-7554 or Rick Copeland with AquiferWatch at rick@aquiferwatch.org (850) 559-7199.More information about this study can be found here.
