Landowners countersue fracked methane pipeline company; supporters converge on Leesburg, GA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Valdosta, July 8th 2014 — As far as 400 miles from Hendry County, Florida, people converge Thursday to support landowners in Lee County, Georgia as they countersue Sabal Trail Transmission about surveying without permission for a huge 36-inch fracked methane pipeline on a hundred-foot right of way.

Watershed groups including WWALS watershed coalition and Our Santa Fe River will be there, representing all the major tributaries of the Suwannee River, in this peaceful assembly to oppose the pipeline.

This hearing is part of an international trend of farmers countersuing Sabal Trail half-owner Spectra Energy, like is also happening in Chilliwack, British Columbia, where Fraser Valley Association of Pipeline Landowners, led by its president Gord Mitchell, is suing Spectra for attempting to put in a new pipeline without any further compensation.

Sabal Trail Transmission is an LLC owned by Spectra Energy of Houston, Texas, and NextEra Energy, parent of FPL of Juno Beach, Florida, who allege this pipeline would serve Florida power needs, even though FPL’s own 10-year plan doesn’t support any need for that much more gas.

Neither Spectra nor FPL nor the pipeline permitting Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) told the public there are already three authorized liquid natural gas (LNG) export companies right at the end of this pipeline chain in Florida. If LNG export happens, the price of natural gas will go up in the U.S. and Canada, according to T. Boone Pickens and other industry experts.

Local landowners in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama and allies object to having their fields, wetlands, and other property invaded for the profit of a few out-of-state companies. If the pipeline explodes local and state governments will have to pay, and nobody wants another explosion like the one that killed Paul McCorkle’s son in Thomson, Georgia.

Also Thursday other pipeline opponents will be going to a Duke Energy meeting in Citrus County, FL about a gas plant probably to be fueled by the Sabal Trail pipeline:

That’s three states or provinces simultaneously opposing Spectra this week.

Date: Thursday 10 July 2014
Times: 10AM assemble outside
11AM hearing inside
Where: Lee County Courthouse
100 Leslie Highway
Leesburg, Georgia 31763
Case: Sabal Trail Transmission v. James E. Bell II and Robert Bell
Case number 14CV208RS

We hear the pipeline company is calling opponents outliers.
All outliers can come see who’s lying!
