The numbers were small, but the enthusiasm was not as the second day of demonstrations against phosphate mining took place in Lakeland in front of the convention center where the 32nd annual meeting of the Regional Mining Conference took place.

Near record-breaking heat did not deter the protestors, who gathered at the busy intersection of Lime and Sikes Streets, adjacent to the conference center where mining was the topic.

Louella Phillips and Howard Jones, both of Polk County are determined to educate the public as to the hazards and risks of mining.  Louella recently made two trips of four hours driving time to Union and Starke, Florida, to speak to the county commissioners against the proposed HPS phosphate mine.

OSFR commends Louella and Howard for organizing this action to educate about phosphate mines.
