Most of those who attended the City of Fort White Council on Monday evening, May 14, were surprised to learn that Core Solar of Austin, Texas will likely soon construct a large, 74.9 megawatt solar photovoltaic facility along Hwy 27 between Fort White and High Springs. In fact, very close to OSFR headquarters at Rum 138 bordered by Fry Rd, Shiloh St. and Hwy 27.
The site includes 1,060 acres of leased land and construction is to start in the fall of 2019 and is to be completed by the following spring. Up to 300 construction jobs are anticipated with two full time jobs after completion.
Construction should have a minimum impact on the environment and the operation impact cannot be compared to fossil fuels.
Representatives from the area’s principal environmental groups, OSFR, Ichetucknee Alliance and Sierra Club were all present and posed several questions to the Core Solar representative Candice Wood. No major dissension was noted.
On the contrary, it is refreshing to see more movement toward sustainable energy and especially an industry that does not disrupt the rural way of life with trucks, noise, dust, risk of explosions.
