Our organization is composed of concerned citizens working to protect the waters and lands supporting the aquifer, springs and rivers within the watershed of the Santa Fe River by promoting public awareness pertaining to the ecology, quality, and quantity of the waters and lands immediately adjacent to and supporting the Santa Fe River, including its springs and underlying aquifer.

The OSFR board meeting on Wed. Oct. 28 at 6:30 pm will feature two very interesting and different presentations.  One will be by Dr. Robert Knight, Director of Florida Springs Institute, author and water scientist, who will speak about plans to open a new springs office/storefront/welcome center in High Springs as a way to raise awareness and to distribute springs information to the many thousands of people who pass through High Springs on their way to the springs of the Santa Fe, Ichetucknee, and Suwannee rivers.

To staff and finance this “Springs Environmental Center,” Florida Springs Institute will need to partner with all of the local and regional springs advocacy groups and businesses, including Our Santa Fe, the Ichetucknee Alliance, Save Our Suwannee, Springs Eternal, North Florida Springs Alliance, Ginnie Springs Outdoors, Great Outdoors Restaurant, Santa Fe Canoe Outpost, Rum 138, Adventure Outpost, Amigos Dive Shop, Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, etc.

Bob is looking for both financial and volunteer support to realize and sustain this office, which should be a benefit to the river, the businesses and the community.

The other presentation, likely but not yet confirmed, will be by Mr. Scott Thomason  of Fort White.  His group is busy fighting the newly-arrived JTC Farms, now under construction.  When completed the factory will house upwards of 360 thousand chickens with the potential to increase the nitrate levels of the nearby Santa Fe River.  The River is less than two miles away and is already damaged by excessive nitrates.

Mr. Thomason will address the board concerning the factory issue as well crowd funding to help finance the resistance.

This OSFR board meeting is open to all members and potential members.  Please come to this meeting at 6:30 at Rum 138, located at 2070 SW Co. Road 138, Ft White, Fl 32038, and become informed on these two important neighborhood issues.
