LDR 18-03, consisting of amendments to the county’s land regulations, was before the commissioners tonight, Dec. 17, 2018. Commissioner Jimmy Tallman made a motion to adopt, and at 5:41 the board voted unanimously to pass the motion, thus ending months of discussions regarding HPSII and their attempts to obtain a permit to mine in Union Co.
Many thanks go to the Union commissioners who stood up for the people and for the future of their county. Because of them, future generations will be able to enjoy a healthy, beautiful rural landscape.
We also thank all the loyal, tireless workers who opposed this mine threat for years. Dan Hilliard drove from Citrus County to speak for the Florida Springs Council, Whitey Markle drove from Williston to speak for Sierra Club, Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson from Fort White spoke, also Carol Burton and Michelle Moretti, as did your Historian, who represented Sierra Club Phosphate Committee. Other supporters of the amendments were in attendance but did not speak.
