Advocates were successful in getting the Senate version of a terrible bill for our springs off its agenda, but we just learned tonight that the House version is moving forward to its second of three committee stops.

So it’s time once again to

TAKE ACTION FOR THE SPRINGS.

Like the Senate version, House Bill 1641 would take away local governments’ and state agencies’ ability to regulate any single-use cup, bottle, bag, or other packaging.

This bill will result in more trash in our local waterways. State park regulations have kept Weeki Wachee, Ichetucknee, Silver, and Rainbow Rivers clean. Please take action to make sure our state parks can continue to do what’s right for our waters.

TAKE ACTION:

HB 1641 will be heard in the House State Affairs Committee at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14th. It only takes a moment to send a pre-written, but customizable, email to members of the committee. Take a moment now, and urge them to VOTE NO on HB 1641: https://floridaspringscouncil.good.do/2024legislativesession/State-Affairs-HB-1641/

The bill will be heard early Wednesday morning, so take action before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13th! Floridians want meaningful policy change to reduce plastic pollution, not more preemption.

BACKGROUND:

Senate Bill 1126 and House Bill 1641 had made it through one committee stop in each Chamber. Last week the Florida Springs Council and partner organizations successfully got SB 1126 withdrawn from the agenda of the Senate Committee. HB 1641 is the House version of the bill, and Wednesday will be its second committee stop of three.

Thank you for taking action,

Ryan Smart
