FERC did not need to give the public a “scoping meeting” for the SEIS for end use green house gas emissions, so let’s give the FERC all our comments and concerns in writing!

A court ruling found that officials failed to consider the greenhouse gas pollution from burning fracked gas delivered by the Sabal Trail pipeline.

Dear Florida_Friend,

In August, a panel of judges ruled to invalidate the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) approval of the 515-mile, fracked gas Sabal Trail pipeline already running from Alabama to Florida. The court found that FERC failed to consider the greenhouse gas pollution from burning fracked gas delivered via the pipeline.1

Act now to demand that FERC consider the true costs of Sabal Trail and deny approval of this pipeline until alternatives are given a fair shake.

This ruling required FERC to consider the impact of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, associated with burning the fracked gas that is transported by Sabal Trail.

In response to the court’s ruling, FERC rushed to produce a woefully inadequate supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS)– it skated over the fact that the pipeline will have an enormous negative impact. FERC estimates the increase in greenhouse gases could be nearly 10%.2 This more than 22 million metric tons of CO2 or CO2e, according to the EPA’s greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator, which is equal to the greenhouse gas emissions from 4,732,334 passenger vehicles driven for one year or the CO2 emissions from 5.5 coal-fired power plants in one year.3 That’s a threat to our climate that we just can’t stand for.

The Sabal Trail pipeline is a dangerous dirty fuel project that got its day in court. Tell FERC now it’s time to admit this pipeline is too big of a threat to our air and water.

Yours in fighting this pipeline,

Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson

The Suwannee – St. Johns group of the Florida chapter of the Sierra Club was founded by Ken and Betty Watson and has been active since 1971. The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 in California by John Muir, Joseph LeConte, and others. Their goal was to “enlist the support and cooperation of the people and government in preserving the forests and other natural features of the Sierra Nevada.” For years, Muir had hiked the mountains of California and shared the wonders he found with others, including President Theodore Roosevelt. There’s more on the history of John Muir and the Sierra Club here.
