For the second year in a row, the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) has joined with the Florida Legislature in recognizing April as Springs Protection Awareness Month. The proclamation encourages all local governments to support springs protection, restoration, and preservation awareness.
Additionally, designating April as Springs Protection Awareness Month provides an opportunity to promote awareness of the importance of springs and the need to preserve them. With more than 300 documented springs, the District has one of the highest concentrations of freshwater springs in the United States.
Springs support tourism and provide recreational opportunities that are essential to our state and local economy. They also provide an important habitat for wildlife and listed species. During low flow periods, springs support the flows of many of our rivers including the Suwannee, Santa Fe, and Withlacoochee. Other rivers such as the Ichetucknee and Wacissa are primarily spring fed. Springs also reflect groundwater conditions.
“Here in the springs heartland we consider ourselves blessed with the many springs located within our District,” said District Executive Director Ann Shortelle.
