Intense corn, wheat and soybean production in the Midwest has caused huge amounts of fertilizer to be carried down the streams and rivers to the Mississippi,  and also to enter the groundwater.

Excess nitrates are a serious problem in Florida, caused principally by agriculture and septic tanks.  Powerful lobbyists for agriculture make it difficult for states to regulate nutrient amounts.
