You don’t have to be a Sumter County resident to oppose this unnecessary new road.
The whole plan of new toll roads was not  conceived  by the Department of Transportation and not because of need, but by greedy politicians who wanted to give favors to those who would profit.  It was slapped together extemporaneously by Bill Galvano and cronies and pushed hard.
There was no planning and political pressure was rampant and when the public hearings began it was immediately apparent that there was no need,  no desire and no logical reason to build these roads other than as a political issue to profit a few.
That is why public comment was overwhelmingly opposed and why, eventually, there was no support and so the plan was dropped.
Except for this last segment,  still heading  toward Taylor County where Florida’s richest man, Thomas Peterffy, has his dream of building a city, with a super road heading right to it.

If you live, work or play in Sumter County, be sure to save the date to speak out against the Northern Turnpike Extension toll road proposal! The last time Sumter residents organized to pack the Sumter County Commission chambers in June, we were able to get more than 120 people in attendance to show up and speak out in opposition to the Northern Turnpike Extension.
Our organizing goal for the July 26 Sumter BOCC meeting is to get 300 people to pack the County Chambers to make it clear that we stop until we get the Sumter Commission to support the #NoBuild option.
Be there and help us spread the word!!
When? Tuesday, July 26th at 5:00 PM
What? Sumter County Commission meeting
Where? Everglades Regional Recreation Center (5497 Marsh Bend Trail, Grand Canyon Room, The Villages, FL 32163).
Sumter residents in Wildwood, Royal, Oxford, and elsewhere are making a push to pack the chamber to drive home the point that ALL of Sumter is united to the “No Build” option.

  1. I live in Escambia county, way up in NW Florida. i have been following this story for a long time. I plan to write to each CC and tell them….NO!!! It is not wanted , or needed. We have to stand up , strong and say no. Simple.
