Florida’s critical water problems continue because no water restoration plan exists from the DEP and the five water management districts. Our state allows over-pumping and little to no control over the nutrients going into our springs and rivers from fertilizer and and septic tanks, and they have no plans to reduce these destructive activities.
Our agencies continue to spend huge sums of taxpayer money and claim victories when this money is wasted on make-work projects with little effect on the environment and no casualties on polluters.
Designations as a Wild and Scenic River and an Outstanding Florida Water should make the Suwannee and its springs immune to excessive and ecologically destructive discharges of pollution, but these worthless titles and designations are designed for greenwashing and political issues. When it comes to a development or water permit, these are worthless words not even considered by water district boards.
And so on it goes, and we think nothing will change unless we can alter the State Constitution.
