Tell the Public Service Commission Your Opinion

OSFR would like to share a news item that Sierra Club Florida is circulating regarding Florida Power & Light.  This energy company wants to raise rates so it can invest more in fossil fuels, when it should put more into sustainable types of energy.ScrollFlorida Power & Light requested a rate hike for more dirty fuels!

Submit a comment to the Florida Public Service Commission letting them know you oppose a rate hike for more fossil fuels.

Florida’s largest electric utility, Florida Power & Light (FPL), wants to raise rates again!

Under FPL’s proposal, Floridians across the state will pay more for their electricity so FPL can build more gas-burning plants in south Florida. This is a terrible deal. Scientists overwhelmingly agree that we need to reduce our reliance on dirty fossil fuels to prevent the worst effects of climate change, but FPL wants to raise rates to double down on gas.

Fortunately, FPL can’t do this without approval from the Florida Public Service Commission — and that gives us the opportunity to weigh-in to say “NO” to rate hikes for gas plants.

Tell the PSC that you don’t want rates to be hiked to pay for more fossil fuels!

What’s even worse, FPL hasn’t demonstrated that these new gas plants — which will cost more than $1 billion — are necessary to serve customers.

FPL seems to be evading the rigorous analysis and public interest review required under Florida law to confirm whether energy efficiency, solar energy, or a combination of renewable resources could power our homes and businesses instead.

You can help make sure that the Florida PSC knows there’s strong opposition to rate hikes for more fossil fuels — send your comment to the PSC today!

If the Commission rejects FPL’s rate hike request, the utility will have to go back to the drawing board to prove these gas plants are necessary and a good idea for consumers. We don’t think they can when there are affordable clean energy solutions available like solar and energy efficiency.

Sincerely,

Frank Jackalone
