Governor DeSantis 2019 In: Both DeSantis & Frazer a waste of time and taxpayer money | Our Santa Fe River, Inc. (OSFR) | Protecting the Santa Fe River

The Blue-Green Algae Task Force was window dressing concocted by Gov. DeSantis to pretend he was actually doing something about Florida’s water problems.  These problems in large part were brought about by the policies of Rick Scott and continued by DeSantis himself.

There were some good people on the Task Force whose voices were ignored, even before the recommendations reached Tallahassee.  Indeed, the leader of the group Thomas Frazer, did not support his own work.

When the legislation  turned the  Cleanwaters Act into a farce, Frazer called it  “…one of the most environmentally progressive pieces of legislation that we’ve seen in over a decade. As a scientist, that’s pretty rewarding to me.”  Our Secretary of Environmental Protection, Noah Valenstein, echoed the praise of the less-than-worthless bill in a similar manner.  The final version of the bill was written by water users and abusers.

What we see here is the repeated phenomenon of our state leaders showcasing just about anything as long as it has the word “ENVIRONMENT” in it.  Final aim is to hoodwink the public and pretend to be doing one’s job.

The message below is from the Florida Springs Council which thankfully is keeping tabs on these shenanigans which only cost Floridians more money.

Do you remember when Governor DeSantis appointed a group of scientists, with much fanfare, to create a Blue-Green Algae Task Force to help solve Florida’s water quality crisis? It gave us all a feeling of reassurance that we had top scientists recommending precise, data-driven solutions to our algae problem.
Three years after the publication of their recommendations, we still have algae-covered springs, persistent coastal algal blooms, a record number of manatees deaths, and a continued decline in water quality statewide. So what happened? The Florida Springs Council worked with a coalition of environmental organizations to answer that question.

The resulting report gives a clear picture of exactly what happened. Not much. Of the Task Force’s 31 recommendations to solve our algae problems, 27 were never implemented.

This report proves that despite Florida’s DEP and legislature’s claims that they have taken action, the vast majority of the Blue Green Algae Task Force’s work was ignored.

It was not for lack of opportunity; the Florida Springs Council drafted and supported bills the past two years that would have enacted several of the most important recommendations. But those bills were rejected, even as manatees were dying in record numbers.

The full report, including all 31 recommendations and a look at which were implemented, is available at FloridaSpringsCouncil.org/bluegreenalgaetaskforce

It can be difficult to keep track of promises once the moment has passed. The role of the Florida Springs Council and our environmental partners is to stay vigilant and cut through the greenwashing to determine the truth. Thank you to all of our members whose financial support makes this work possible. If you aren’t yet a sustaining member, consider becoming one today.
