This bill is such a bad idea and will eventually contaminate areas surrounding the roads.  Radioactivity will surely leach from roadbeds into our groundwater.  Clearly this is a buyout to help guilty mining companies dispose of their messes.

Please let your representative in Tallahassee we are not supporting this bad legislation.

Tell your legislators:

vote NO on SB1258!

With only a week left in session, SB1258, the Radioactive Roads Act, has been gliding through the Senate and the House. This bill tells the state to consider the use of radioactive waste called “phosphogypsum” in road construction. Phosphogypsum, a waste product from manufacturing fertilizer, is so radioactive that it’s highly regulated by the EPA, because it would expose the public to an unacceptably dangerous cancer risk.

We don’t want tons of radioactive waste paving our roads, and neither should you.

The EPA found that phosphogypsum even contains uranium and other heavy metals and radioactive decay products. On top of the risk posed to the roads themselves, these toxic chemicals and metals would leach into our groundwater and could contaminate our drinking supply. All this because the fertilizer industry is running out of places to put this toxic waste, and allowing its use in roads would also clear the way for the industry to make even more of it and turn a profit.

Our health and the cleanliness of our drinking water are more important than the bottom line of phosphogypsum producers, and it’s time to remind Tallahassee. Urge Governor DeSantis and the legislature to stop radioactive roads today.

Time is running out. Act now.

All the best,

Luigi Guadarrama
